The Impact of LA Fires on Hollywood
Wildfires raging in and around Los Angeles have devastated vast areas of land and disrupted countless lives. As of Thursday morning, at least five people have died, tens of thousands of acres, including thousands of homes, have been destroyed, and both Gov. Gavin Newsom and President Joe Biden have declared states of emergency and major disaster, respectively.
The largest fire, the Palisades Fire, ignited on Tuesday due to strong winds and other contributing factors. It has ravaged the celebrity-filled Pacific Palisades community. On Wednesday night, a fifth major fire, the Sunset Fire, broke out near Runyon Canyon, threatening iconic Hollywood landmarks such as the Hollywood Bowl, the Walk of Fame, and the Dolby and TCL Chinese theaters. According to CAL FIRE, the Sunset Fire has already consumed 43 acres and remains entirely uncontained.
As the greater Hollywood area battles these blazes, here’s how the entertainment industry has been impacted so far:
### Celebrities Evacuated and Homes Destroyed
Numerous celebrities have shared their experiences of loss and evacuation on social media.
Actor James Woods, known for *Once Upon a Time in America*, broke down during a CNN interview, revealing that his home was destroyed by the Palisades Fire. “One day you’re swimming in the pool, and the next day it’s all gone,” the 77-year-old said. On X, he added, “It tests your soul, losing everything at once.”
Paris Hilton posted a news clip on Instagram, captioned, “Sitting with my family, watching the news, and seeing our home in Malibu burn to the ground on live TV is something no one should ever have to experience.”
Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis shared images of her neighborhood’s destruction, writing, “Our beloved neighborhood is gone. Our home is safe, but so many others have lost everything. Help where you can. Thank you to the first responders and firefighters.”
Cary Elwes, known for *The Princess Bride*, revealed on Instagram that his family lost their home to the Palisades Fire but expressed gratitude for their survival, calling the fire “truly devastating.”
Grammy-winning songwriter Diane Warren shared a photo of a rock and an update about her Los Angeles beach house, saying, “I’ve had this house for almost 30 years. It looks like it was lost in the fire last night.” She added that her Malibu animal rescue ranch was safe, emphasizing, “The animals are OK, which is the most important thing.”
*Star Wars* actor Mark Hamill also evacuated his Malibu home, sharing on Instagram: “Evacuated Malibu so last minute. Small fires on both sides of the road as we approached [the Pacific Coast Highway].”
Mandy Moore, star of *This Is Us*, was affected by the Eaton Fire in Altadena. She and her family evacuated their home, with Moore posting videos of the flames on Instagram. “Honestly, I’m in shock and feeling numb for all so many have lost, including my family. My children’s school is gone. Our favorite restaurants, leveled. So many friends and loved ones have lost everything too. Our community is broken, but we will rebuild together. Sending love to all affected and to those on the front lines.”
The fires continue to wreak havoc, and the entertainment industry, like many others, is reeling from the devastation.
